After Memorial Day, this weekend has that classic “reset weekend” energy. The giant franchise cannon has already fired. Tuner
Tuner looks like the adult-skewing option for people who want something stylish and dangerous instead of loud and disposable. On paper, the blend of crime, drama, music, romance, and thriller is wearing a lot of hats, but at least they are interesting hats.
Pressure
This one may be the most quietly serious movie on the board. With a cast that includes Andrew Scott, Brendan Fraser, Kerry Condon, and Chris Messina, Pressure has a strong lane if audiences are in the mood for grown-up tension instead of meme fuel.
The Breadwinner
This is the broadest commercial crowd-pleaser in the new group. A family comedy with Nate Bargatze, Mandy Moore, Colin Jost, and Zach Cherry has something very straightforward about it, and that may actually help on a post-holiday weekend. People know what it is. Sometimes that is half the battle.
Power Ballad
This one is a bit of a shape-shifter. With Jack Reynor, Paul Rudd, Havana Rose Liu, and Nick Jonas, Power Balladfeels like the possible “what the hell is this?” choice that some weekends need. That ambiguity may hurt it commercially, but the cast and tone could still make it the weird one people gravitate toward.

1. Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu

Even after the Memorial Day launch, it should still have enough gas to hold the top spot one more weekend. Franchise gravity is still gravity.
2. Backrooms

Of the new openers, this feels like the title with the clearest urgency. Horror plus creepy-internet-nightmare branding is a decent recipe for a strong first weekend.
3. The Breadwinner
$12M to $20M
This feels like the best-positioned mainstream alternative for audiences who do not want dread, war, or Star Wars. It has the easiest crowd-pleasing lane of the new group.
4. Pressure
$8M to $14M
Prestige-adjacent, sturdy cast, grown-up tone. That is enough to matter, even if it is probably not enough to erupt.
5. Tuner or Power Ballad
$5M to $9M
This is the messiest slot, which is usually the fun one. Tuner may have the slicker adult-thriller appeal. Power Balladmay benefit from curiosity and cast. One of them probably sneaks in.
New Movies on Streaming This Weekend
If you are staying home, the newest-at-home listings for May 29 are actually pretty active. The main arrivals include The Last Viking, Propeller One-Way Night Coach, Miss You, Love You, sMOTHERed, Hucch, and Like Ah Boss: Journey of a Soca King – Machel Montano. Just ahead of them are recent adds like Over Your Dead Body, Animal Farm, Fuze, Two Prosecutors, Desert Warrior, Kontinental ’25, and Why We Dream.
A few stand out immediately. The Last Viking, Two Prosecutors, and Kontinental ’25 all look like real options if you are not in the mood to gamble on a new theatrical opener. So the couch bench has a few actual ringers instead of just algorithm mulch.
