All This Weekend’s Movies and More With The Weekend POURcast
Every Friday, we here at Cocktails and Movies serve up the Weekend POURcast: a quick-hit look at what’s new in theaters, what might matter at the box office, what’s fresh on streaming, and what cocktail should be in your hand while you decide whether to leave the house or let the couch keep custody of the weekend. After Memorial Day gave us a new Star Wars entry and then a nasty little horror surprise upset, this weekend looks like the hangover after the party, which is usually where the weird stuff starts making real money.
Last weekend, Backrooms exploded onto the scene with an $81.4 million opening, the biggest debut in A24 history, while Obsession did something even stranger: it ROSE AGAIN 14.3% in its third weekend to $27.4 million and pushed its domestic total to $105.8 million. Meanwhile, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu fell to third with $24.5 million. So yes, horror is scary healthy right now.
This weekend’s board is a lot busier than the original version of this article gave it credit for. The big wide openers include Scary Movie, Masters of the Universe, Power Ballad, and The Currents, with Scary Movie and Masters of the Universe clearly the two major commercial swings.
Last Weekend in Review
The larger story is pretty brutal for everybody not named horror. Backrooms and Obsession both outperformed the new Star Wars movie last weekend, which is the sort of sentence studio executives hate hearing out loud. But it makes sense. Both films arrived with clear hooks, low-budget swagger, and the feeling that younger audiences had discovered something that belonged to them instead of being handed another shiny corporate heirloom.
That brings us to the big question for this weekend: can Obsession do it again? Another weekend of actual growth would be almost absurd. A fourth straight climb is not impossible, but the more realistic bet is a freakishly strong hold or only a tiny dip. It has already broken the normal rhythm, so writing it off as finished would be dumb.
New in Theaters This Weekend
Scary Movie
This is now the weekend’s biggest pure commercial wild card, and honestly, maybe not even that wild. Paramount’s revival is tracking to beat Masters of the Universe and potentially challenge Backrooms for the top spot, with projections ranging from about $40 million to north of $50 million. That is not nostalgia dust. That is real marketplace weight. If audiences want broad, stupid, self-aware chaos after a couple weeks of dread and prestige tension, this thing could absolutely clean up.
Masters of the Universe
This is the largest fantasy-action play on the board and the one with the most obvious “big-screen IP spectacle” appeal. Box Office Mojo lists it as a June 5 wide release from Amazon MGM, and tracking has it in the $35 million to $40 million range. That makes it a real player, even if it is entering a market where horror currently has the cultural pulse.
Power Ballad
This still looks like the strangest commercial swing on the board. Paul Rudd, Nick Jonas, and Havana Rose Liu in a comedy-drama-music-musical is either a clever sleeper or a beautiful mess. Possibly both. On a weekend where the marketplace is already weird, that may actually help.
The Currents
This one feels like the quieter adult-leaning option. It does not have the brute-force commercial hook of Scary Movie or Masters, but weekends like this sometimes leave room for one title that benefits simply from being calmer and more grounded than the louder stuff around it.
Box Office Forecast: June 5th-7th, 2026
1. Scary Movie
$42M to $55M
This now looks like the likeliest new No. 1 challenger. The tracking is strong, the hook is obvious, and parody nostalgia might be arriving at exactly the right moment.
2. Backrooms
$28M to $40M
Coming off that $81.4 million launch, it still has enough heat to stay very high even with two major new arrivals.
3. Masters of the Universe
$30M to $40M
Big IP, fantasy-action lane, premium-format appeal, and enough recognition to matter immediately. This is not a side dish.
4. Obsession
$18M to $27M
Could it rise again? Maybe. But even if it does not, another absurdly strong hold is still very much in play.
5. Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu or Power Ballad
$7M to $14M
This is where the chart gets messy. Star Wars still has franchise gravity. Power Ballad has curiosity factor. One of them probably takes the last slot.
Horror Corner
Let’s not dance around it: horror is still running the table.
Backrooms opened huge. Obsession rose in weekend three. And now Scary Movie is coming in to siphon off some of that same audience appetite, even if it is using parody instead of dread. The bigger takeaway is that horror in all its forms is currently speaking to audiences more directly than a lot of cleaner studio product. That is not an accident. That is the market telling everybody what it wants.
So can Obsession make it another weekend with growing box office numbers? It could, but the smarter editorial angle is this: the real victory now is not necessarily another increase, but proving the movie’s freakish weekend-three bump was not a fluke. If it holds near flat again, that is already a huge story.
New Movies on Streaming This Weekend
If you are staying home, the streaming bench is still active. Rotten Tomatoes’ newest-at-home listings show recent arrivals including Office Romance, Omaha, Rich Flu, Chum, Signal One, Seven Snipers, RZA’s One Spoon of Chocolate, Mexico 86, and Groundswell. A few stand out right away, including Omaha at 91% critics and 87% audience on Rotten Tomatoes.
Weekend Drink Pairing: Scott Pilgrim Punch

This weekend’s cocktail pick is the Scott Pilgrim Punch.
Why this one? Because this weekend’s whole vibe is young, chaotic, and just self-aware enough to know it is being a little feral. Backrooms and Obsession are not polite studio product. They feel scrappier, stranger, and a little more plugged into the bloodstream. Scott Pilgrim Punch fits that energy better than another sleek, sharp-edged drink we have already leaned on too many times.
It also already lives on CocktailsandMovies.com, so it still gives us the internal-link value we want without repeating ourselves like a tired sequel. More importantly, it feels playful on the surface with just enough kick underneath, which is exactly the sort of energy this weekend deserves.
Final Pour
This weekend is no longer just about whether horror can stay hot. It is also about whether comedy-horror nostalgia and old-school fantasy IP can muscle their way into a marketplace that has recently belonged to younger, weirder genre energy. Scary Movie and Masters of the Universe absolutely belong in that conversation, and they should have been in the article from the start.
Not a bad menu. Liminal terror, parody carnage, fantasy muscle, and a punchy cocktail. 🍸🍿
