cocktail shaker
Muddler or wooden spoon handle
Jigger or measuring spoon
Fine mesh strainer
Collins glass or stemmed wine glass
Bar Spoon

- 1/4 tsp Vanilla extract
- 2 ounce Soda water

- Lemon wheel, black berry or mint sprg optional garnish
Add the blackberries and mint leaves to your shaker.
Gently muddle them just enough to release the juices and aroma. Do not pulverize the mint into green sadness.
Add the lemon juice, simple syrup, vanilla extract, and cold water.
Fill the shaker with ice and shake hard for 10 to 12 seconds.
Double strain into a glass filled with fresh ice.
Top with soda water and stir gently.
Garnish with a mint sprig, a blackberry, or a lemon wheel.
Why It Works
The trick here is contrast. Blackberries give the drink richness and color, but lemon keeps it from getting jammy. Mint adds freshness, while the vanilla rounds out the sharper fruit edges and gives the mocktail its “velvet” quality. It is subtle, not dessert-like. That matters. Too much vanilla and this thing turns into a Yankee candle with ambition. The right amount makes it feel lush, smooth, and just different enough to stand out.
It also works because it feels seasonally right. Spring drinks should feel alive. They should have lift. Velvet Picnic does that while still offering a little depth, which makes it more memorable than the usual sparkling fruit water pretending to be a personality.
