The Surely Shirley Cocktail
A sky-blue gin sour with lemon, cherry, violet, and a fizzy little altitude problem. Some movies deserve a drink that knows exactly what it is doing, even when it looks completely ridiculous doing it. Inspired by Airplane!, The Surely Shirley Cocktail is our playful and colorful riff on the classic Aviation cocktail, built with gin, lemon, maraschino liqueur, crème de violette, and just enough blue curaçao to make the whole thing feel like it has cleared the tower without permission. It is bright, tart, floral, lightly sweet, and topped with a cloud-like foam that makes it look far more sophisticated than a cocktail paired with one of the stupidest great comedies ever made has any right to be. Like the movie itself, this drink is elegant nonsense: tightly constructed, deeply silly, and best enjoyed with someone nearby who cannot resist saying the line before you do.
Skill Level: Medium
Nothing insane, but you are shaking with egg white or aquafaba, balancing citrus and liqueurs, and adding a little visual flair. This is not “dump rum in Coke and pray.” This is “I own a strainer and maybe too many opinions.”

Notes
Why It Works
The classic Aviation is already the obvious spiritual cocktail for Airplane!, but this version gets a little louder, brighter, and more absurd, which is exactly what the movie deserves. The gin gives it a crisp, botanical backbone. The lemon keeps it sharp. The maraschino adds that slightly nutty cherry sweetness, while the crème de violette gives it a floral lift without turning it into perfume from your grandmother’s haunted vanity. The blue curaçao is the little idiot genius move. It gives the drink a brighter sky-blue color and a touch of orange sweetness, making it feel more playful than the standard Aviation. The egg white or aquafaba creates a cloud-like foam on top, because subtlety can go sit in coach.Movie Pairing
Airplane! is one of the great comedy miracles because it looks like total nonsense, but every gag is engineered with frightening precision. The Surely Shirley Cocktail works the same way. It’s pretty, stupid, elegant, fizzy, colorful, and just serious enough to make the joke land harder.
Sip it while watching Airplane! and you get the perfect at-home pairing: a cocktail that feels like first class, behaves like coach, and absolutely should not be trusted with the controls.
Final Call: Make this one cold, foamy, and bright. Then put on Airplane!, quote every third line, and pretend you didn’t laugh at the same joke for the 400th time. 🍸🍿
