Friday Is Weekend POURcast Time!
Every Friday, we here at Cocktails and Movies serve up the Weekend POURcast: a quick-hit look at what’s new in theaters, what might matter at the box office, what’s fresh on streaming, and what cocktail should be in your hand while you decide whether to head to the theater or let your couch keep custody of your weekend. This week’s weekend has a little more chaos baked in than the last one, which is always healthier than when one movie hogs all the popcorn.
Last weekend, The Devil Wears Prada 2 opened at $76.7 million domestic and took the crown, while Michael held second with $54.4 million, The 
Super Mario Galaxy Movie stayed in the mix with $12.1 million, and Project Hail Marykept showing ridiculous stamina with $8.5 million in weekend seven. That means the holdovers are still alive, but they are finally staring down a real incoming threat in Mortal Kombat II.
The movies leading the Weekend POURcast in this weekend’s wide theatrical releases are Mortal Kombat II, The Sheep Detectives, Two Pianos, and Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft – The Tour Live in 3D. There are also several limited titles on the board, but those four are the ones walking in with actual national footprint.
Last Weekend in Review
The Devil Wears Prada 2 did exactly what it was supposed to do. It opened like an event, grabbed the top spot, and proved there is still plenty of box office life in a smartly targeted sequel that knows its audience cold. Michael dropped a perfectly normal 44% in weekend two, which is still strong considering how massive its opening was.
Meanwhile, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Project Hail Mary kept doing holdover business the way strong movies do: not loudly, just stubbornly. Mario crossed $402.7 million domestic, while Project Hail Mary hit $318.3 million, which is the kind of grown-up sci-fi durability studios pretend they can manufacture on command but almost never do.
That matters because this weekend is less about whether the old guard disappears and more about whether one of the new arrivals can punch hard enough to alter the shape of the chart. There is one obvious candidate for that job, and it is bringing spinal injuries.
New in Theaters This Weekend
Mortal Kombat II
This is the weekend’s big commercial swing. It is exactly what you want it to be: action, adventure, fantasy, and sci-fi with no visible interest in behaving. And honestly, that clarity matters. If audiences want a fresh theatrical excuse to leave the house, this is the one that screams “big-screen dumb fun” the loudest. It has franchise recognition, fight-night appeal, and enough built-in mayhem to make it the clearest challenger to Prada 2.
The Sheep Detectives
This one may end up being the stealth player of the weekend. On paper, “action-comedy-family-mystery” sounds like someone threw four demographics into a blender and somehow got lucky. That could work. It is clearly aiming for the crowd that wants something family-friendly but new, which means it is trying to siphon some business from Mario while offering a different tone. If the movie is even half as charming as that cast lineup suggests, it could overperform.
Two Pianos
Two Pianos is the adult alternative for people who do not want disembowelment, sheep sleuthing, or Miranda Priestly. It feels like the most vulnerable of the wide releases simply because it is entering a crowded weekend without the same brute-force commercial hook as the others. Still, these smaller upscale plays sometimes find a real lane when the audience wants something a little less blunt.

And then there is the event-card wildcard. Concert films keep proving that if audiences feel like they are being offered a communal experience instead of just content, they will show up. It is not likely to win the weekend outright, but it does not need to. It just needs to carve out a fandom lane and cash in, which these things are getting annoyingly good at doing.
Weekend POURcast Box Office Forecast: May 8th-10th, 2026
1. Mortal Kombat II
$42M to $58M
This is the likeliest new number one. It has the freshest hook, the broadest commercial lane among the newcomers, and the kind of noisy theatrical value proposition that usually plays well in early May.
2. The Devil Wears Prada 2
$34M to $46M
After opening to $76.7 million, it is not going to collapse. The question is just how much Mortal Kombat II eats into its momentum. Even with a significant drop, it should remain one of the weekend’s major players.
3. Michael
$24M to $34M
A 44% drop in weekend two is solid, and there is no reason to think it suddenly falls apart in weekend three. It still has event energy of its own and broad audience awareness.
4. The Sheep Detectives
$12M to $18M
This feels like the weekend’s sleeper. The cast is strong, the family angle is clear, and it offers a fresh choice for audiences who are not in the mood for bones snapping in Dolby.
5. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie or Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft – The Tour Live in 3D
$7M to $12M
Mario is still stubborn, but event cinema can steal a weekend slot fast if the, especially if the Eilish Army fandom shows up with viewing purpose. This is the messiest part of the chart, which usually makes it the most fun to watch.
New Movies on Streaming This Weekend
The Weekend POURcast isn’t JUST about the local movie theater. If you are staying home, the newest-at-home streaming outlook this weekend includes Exit 8, Remarkably Bright Creatures, Beast, Buffet Infinity, Fantasy Life, Couples Weekend, PH-1, No Place to Be Single, and Broad Trip.
Of those, Exit 8 looks like the strongest pure movie-night recommendation. Buffet Infinity has also been getting strong reaction, while Beast and Fantasy Life give the couch crowd a couple of different lanes depending on whether you want tension, weirdness, or something a little more off-center.
So the couch bench this week is not bad at all. If theaters feel too crowded or too expensive, there are at least a few real options at home instead of the usual landfill of algorithm bait.
Weekend Drink Pairing: The Executive Order Cocktail
This weekend’s cocktail pick is The Executive Order Cocktail. It already lives on CocktailsandMovies.com, which means it does double duty as a drink recommendation and an internal link worth having. It feels refined, bold, and just sharp enough to work for a weekend split between couture warfare leftovers, fantasy violence, and an army of very intelligent sheep.
More importantly, it sounds like a cocktail with posture. A little polished, a little dangerous, and not especially interested in apologizing for itself. That feels right for this weekend.
Final Pour
This is a healthier weekend POURcast than the earlier sleepy early part of the year. Mortal Kombat II looks like the likely new box office champ, The Devil Wears Prada 2 should still hold that second spot, Michael remains a real force, and The Sheep Detectives may be the wildcard that sneaks into the conversation if audiences want something a little less violent and a little more weird. On streaming, Exit 8 looks like the sharpest at-home pick if you would rather stay in and keep your pants optional.
